Braveheart
The movie
"Braveheart", depicting the story of William Wallace as the
protagonist, is one movie that easily steals anyone's heart away.
It is not just the
struggle for freedom of the Scotts from the British, but the show of
unrelenting determination that makes ones heart follow the steps of this brave
man.
Set in 1290, the little
William Wallace wishes to fight the tyranny of the British. However, his father
forbids him. They are farmers by profession, and still fight to protect their
motherland from the British. In the battle, his father is killed.
His uncle, who brings him
up, takes him on a tour across Europe, teaching him the art of warfare, and the
importance of using ones mental strength rather than physical strength to win
over the enemy.
After many years, young
Wallace returns back to his home village. In the mean time, the British Emperor
enforces the "Prima Nocta" , wherein, when a couple get newly
married, the noble shares the bed with the bride on her first night.
To avoid this insult,
Wallace secretly marries. However, his wife is raped, chased and murdered in
public.
How William goes about
avenging the British forms the rest of the plot. The inspirational speech
rendered during one of the wars, is particularly motivational.
"I am William
Wallace. And I see a whole army of my countrymen, here in defiance of tyranny!
You have come to fight as free men. And free man you are! What will you do
without freedom? Will you fight?" "Two thousand against ten?" –
the veteran shouted. "No! We will run – and live!"
"Yes!"
Wallace shouted back. "Fight and you may die. Run and you will live at
least awhile. And dying in your bed many years from now, would you be willing to
trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance, to
come back here as young men and tell our enemies that they may take our lives
but they will never take our freedom!"
At the end, the King
tortures him and tries to force him to ask for pardon, for bringing about the
mutiny. In spite of repeated tortures, up stands the man, upright, in search of
freedom. When life stood by a thin thread, and a single word "Mercy"
could have saved his life, Wallace, proudly proclaims "Freedom" before
being executed. An uncommon, unbeatable and unforgettable show of valor worthy
of pure admiration!!!!
