The Count of Monte Cristo

The Count of Monte CristoThe Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the best revenge novel anyone can lay hands on.

I read this book as a kid, in school, long, long ago (as an abridged version) - and devoured the original several times ever since.

To make a long thing short - Edmond Dantès is a young man, with a girlfriend, to whom he is to be married shortly, and an admirable sailor who has newly been named Captain of the ship.

Life could not be more perfect!!

Then, on the day of his wedding, he is arrested on charges of being a Bonapartist agent - and locked away in the treacherous Chateau d'If without any further investigation or explanation.

Days turn into months, months into years, Dantes loses sanity gradually, when Abe Faria comes to his rescue. Both of them plot an escape from the prison. He further demystifies the cause of Dante's tragedy.

How the protagonist escapes the clutches of the prison, and avenges all the many people who conspired to do away with him forms the rest of the plot - a wonderful book of revenge - the likes of which has never been written before - the likes of which can never be recreated again.

Hail Alexandre Dumas!! The Father of Revenge Literature!!
